Posted on March 13, 2020March 16, 2020 by Chris Arnold

Votive mass 29 from the Anglican Missal. The liturgical color is violet.

Introit

Be mindful of thy covenant, O Lord, and say to the destroying angel: Stay now thy hand, and let not the land be made desolate, and destroy not every living thing. (Alleluia, alleluia) Ps 80. Hear, O thou Shepherd of Israel: thou that leadest Joseph like a sheep
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
Be mindful of thy covenant…

The Collect

O God, who desirest not the death of sinners, but rather that they should turn and repent: mercifully look upon thy people who return unto thee; and while they are devoted unto thee, do though, in thy mercy, remove from them the scourges of thy wrath, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with  thee and the Holy Ghost dost live and reign, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Epistle: 2 Samuel 24:15-25

In those days the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men. And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing place of Araunah the Jebusite. And David spake unto the Lord when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.

And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the Lord in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite. And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the Lord commanded. And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground. And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the Lord, that the plague may be stayed from the people. And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood. All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The Lord thy God accept thee. And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the Lord my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. And David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

Gradual

Ps. 107. The Lord sent his word, and healed them: and they were saved from their destruction
V. O that men would therefore praise the Lord for his goodness: and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!
Alleluia. Alleluia. V. Ps. 69. Save me, O God; for the waters are come in, even unto my soul, alleluia.

After Septuagesima, the Alleluia and its verse are omitted, and the following is said:

Tract. Ps 103. O Lord, deal not with us after our sins: neither reward us after our iniquities.
V. Ps. 79. O Lord, remember not our old sins, but have mercy upon us, and that soon: for we are come to great misery.
V. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy Name: O deliver us, and be merciful until our sins for thy Name’s sake.

In Eastertide, the Gradual is omitted, and the following is said:

Alleluia. Alleluia.
V. Ps. 69. Save me, O God; for the waters are come in, even unto my soul, alleluia.
V. Zech. 8. I will save my people Israel in the evil day: and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness. Alleluia.

Gospel: St. Luke 4:38-44

At that time: Jesus arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

Offertory

Num. 16. And the priest stood between the living and thedead, having a golden cense in his hand: and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people, and so appeased the wrath of God : and the plague was stayed by the Lord (alleluia).

Secret

We beseech thee, O Lord, to succor us, who here present our sacrifice unto thee: that by thy mighty power we may be absolved from all our sins, and delivered from all the assaults of destruction, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Communion.

St. Luke 6. A multitude of sick and they that were vexed with unclean spirits came to heim : for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all (alleluia).

Postcommunion

Hear us, O God of our salvation : and deliver thy people from the terrors of thy wrath ; that by the bountiful goodness of they mercy they may evermore abide in peace and confidence, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Aman.
